NSS Bureau of the University was established in the year 2000, for which Government of Odisha had allotted 5700 volunteers in 114 units during the session 2011-12. But the number of volunteers sanctioned for the University has increased to 6200 with 124 units, of which 78 Units (47Male, 31 Female) have been allotted to the affiliated colleges of Balasore district and 46 Units (28Male, 18 Female) have been allotted to the colleges of Bhadrak District in the year 2012-13. Recently, the number of volunteers sanctioned for the University has increased to 8050 with 155 units, of which 100 Units (53Male, 47 Female) have been allotted to the affiliated colleges of Balasore district and 55 Units (33 Male, 22 Female) have been allotted to the colleges of Bhadrak District in the year 2018-19.
At present, the volunteer's strength is 7750 out of which 4300 are male volunteers and 3450 are female volunteers. There are155 units spreading in 68 colleges within the jurisdiction of Fakir Mohan University Structure of NSS under Fakir Mohan University, Balasore. Each NSS unit consists of 50 NSS volunteers and it is supervised by one Programme Officer(PO). The college level NSS activity is monitored by College Level NSS Advisory Committee. The College
Level NSS Advisory Committee is responsible for all the NSS activities at thecollege/unit level. Each unit is having an adopted village.

In order to monitor the activities at the unit level, District Programme Officer (DPO) hasbeen appointed. At the University level, there is 'University Level NSS Advisory Committee'and 'NSS Bureau' to plan and implement NSS programmes. The Bureau functions under theVice Chancellor of the University. The Programme Coordinator, NSS is the main executivefunctionary in charge of NSS Bureau. The NSS Bureau make necessary liaison with the NSSRegional Centre, State Liaison Officer (SLO) and Empanelled Training Institute, OUAT, BBSRfor effective implementation of NSS activities.
True to the ethos of NSS, Fakir Mohan University, Balasore is taking up lot of communities related activities to link the campus with the community.Strategically, regular activities at college level are centred around creation of awareness against social evils, economics exploitation, educating people on rights and duties of a citizen, constitutional and governmental provision for the welfare of the people etc.Volunteers are also involved in popularizing scientific values among people in the adopted villages. The volunteers are trained in such areas and are inspired to innovations and creativeness. Efforts are made to create assets both for the college and community. They have been engaged in various governmental programmes such as Pulse Polio, AIDS and Health Awareness, Literacy etc along with government functionaries.
Blood Donation camps were organized by different colleges to spread awareness amongyouth as well as community. In the year 2019-20, Swarnachuda College Mitrapur, and RIHS College, Bhograi, Balasore organized Blood donation camp and Blood Grouping camp, awareness programme on HIV/AIDS; Saraswata Mahavidyalaya, Anantapur, Balasore, organized Blood donation camp, rally, awareness programme on HIV/AIDS; Shantilata Mahavidyalaya,Uitikiri, Balasore organized Blood donation camp, awareness programme on HIV/AIDS; Simulia College, Markona, Balasore, JN College Rasalpur, Balasore, BCET, Sergarh, Balasore organized Blood Grouping camp, awareness programme on HIV/AIDS, awareness on Malaria, Mass Rally, Health Check-up Programme, debate & Quiz Competition and Plantation.
Special camping programmes are integral part of NSS which provide unique opportunities tothe volunteers for group living, collective experience sharing and direct interaction with thecommunity. Proposals of Special Camping Programme are being scrutinized and orientationson formulation of action plan for the adopted village during Special Camping period arebeing made. These Special Camps are organized during Winter Vacation, Summer and Durga PujaVacation.
The NSS Cell has undertaken number of programmes during the year 2019-20 where in 52Units of 26 colleges were actively involved. In special camp volunteersperforms street plays on various current social issues such as dowry prohibition, eradication of illiteracy, Right to Information,environment protection, sanitation, etc., at different villages adjacent to colleges. Besides that, different NSS Units conducted rally and awareness programme on Voters'Rights and utility of participatory democracy.NSS volunteers are also participating in different cultural programmes and events.
For the session 2019-20, two Best Volunteers and two Best Programme Officers were selected by the Bureau and were awarded with certificates and mementos during the Foundation Day celebration of the University on 11.07.2020. The Awardees are:
The NSS Advisory Committee meeting was held on 05.10.2018, which reviewed the major activities of 2017-18 and approved the programme for the year 2018-19.Keeping the objective of NSS in mind, the Bureau has undertaken various programmes like Plantation, Blood Donation, Sanitation Programme, Health Programme on HIV Aids, Pulse Polio Immunization, Free Health Check-up, Yoga etc. through its constituent units during 2018-19. NSS units of the Bureau have undertaken Special Camps Programmes during Summer Vacation, Puja Holiday, X-Mas Holidays, besides conducting Inter College and other Camps. In total, 32camps have been conducted during 2018-19.
