About Department

The P.G. Department of Population Studies was established in the year 2004 to cater to the needs of imparting education and carrying out research on issues of population, migration and urbanization and public health. It has been thus offering regular M. A., M. Phil. and Ph. D. courses in Population Studies. The P.G. Department of Population Studies holds a unique position not only in Odisha for being the only Department of Population Studies, but also in the entire Central and Eastern part of India. It draws well-trained faculties from the Universities/Institutes of international repute. Its student-friendly environment, competitive job-oriented syllabus and development/ action-based work exposure enhance their skill and vision. Practical classes with well-equipped infrastructure and statistical packages like SPSS/ STATA helps them to handle large database, such as NFHS/ DLHS/ Census etc. Further students are also trained on different data entry tools and data management softwares, which make them competent in the current job market. The Department conducts out-reach programme, and also best practices such as visiting the nearby villages to study their socio-economic problems, education, livelihood patterns, nutrition, health, sanitation and safe drinking water etc. Our students also conduct various awareness programs (tobacco campaign, provisions available for higher education, family planning etc.) in remote/tribal villages to provide them the much-needed variety of knowledge.

Vision
  • To globally recognize the department of excellence in teaching and research on population issues contributing for the social development of communities through collaborative work with other institute and with the local communities. It also envisages to improve research capacity and promote evidence-based population policies and programmes both locally and nationally.
Mission
  • The mission of the department of population studies is to strengthen local, regional, and national development initiatives through the conduct of high quality, multidisciplinary and socially responsible research on population, health, nutrition, and all other aspects of human development. It intends to achieve this mission through research dissemination activities, policy briefing, training and extension services. The main objectives of the department as follows: • Creating competent professionals according to market demand • Collaborating and exchanging knowledge on population and development • Advocacy and awareness on population issues • Creating databases for local and regional planning • Dissemination of population data
