Established in 2007, this department as named Social Science is one and unique of its kind in Odisha. Since its inception the department has emerged as one of the primier department of the University. The department from the very begining has made pioneering contribution in dismantling the narrow disciplinary compartments found in traditional academic structure and emerged as a prominent multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary department with the confluence of four disciplines of Political Science, Economics, Sociology and History with an additional responsibility of hosting Odia, English and Urdu. To its credit the department has recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Eurasia National University, Astana, Kazakhstan, Karaganda State Technical University, Karaganda, Kazakhstan, Bolu Abant Izzet Baysal University, Bolu, Turkey, Kokand University, Kokand, Uzbekistan for mutual collaboration in academic and research activities. The department offering M.A., M.Phil and Ph.D programmes in all the discipline is by far the largest department in terms of students and faculties’ strength. The M.A though is relatively discipline orientated but the students are also encouraged to take up some courses in CBCS (Choice Based Credit System) mode in other departments in their 3rd semester. In the last semester students have to write a project work to establish their theoretical knowledge base with the realities of the society in the form of dissertation. Local research with global knowledge is encouraged with a motto of go together to grow together for a holistic and sustainable development of the society at large. At the research level of M.Phil and Ph.D the interdisciplinary thrust of the department comes to the fore. Innovation in the course contents as well as in the direction of research testifies to the achievements of the department. The Department offers courses and degrees in Political Science, Economics, and Sociology with an underlying philosophy of imparting and developing understanding of social realities, and to cope with the demands and changes of the time. The department course contents and components, faculty research profile, publications and interdisciplinary dissertation and thesis work conforms this. The admission process to the department in all programmes takes place through career marking plus with a competitive entrance examination system conducted by common entrance test for all the universities through the SAMS portal. The student diversity, progression and faculties diversity of the department in the university in impeccable. The department offers library and internet facilities with ProQuest to its students and research scholars with LAN and WI-FI facilities.
