The Department of Physics (Erstwhile Department of Applied Physics and Ballistics) is established in the year 2007 as a regular Post Graduate Department under Fakir Mohan University, Balasore, Odisha. This Department offers courses like MSc in Physics with electives in Nuclear and particle Physics, Condensed matter Physics, Electronics, and Ballistics and Ph.D. program in Physics. The uniqueness of the Department is that it is the first and only Post Graduate Department under a general State University, all over the country, introducing a course like Ballistics. It focuses on various research areas like High energy Physics, Nuclear Physics, Condensed matter Physics, Gravitation and Cosmology, Radiation Physics, and Ballistics.

Uniqueness: This Post Graduate Department of Applied Physics and Ballistics is the First in India to introduce such innovative subject in M.Sc. degree in active support of PXE, DRDO, Chandipur, a sister organisation of DRDO with a vision of fulfilling the demand of quality and strength in the defence research services of the country.
